Location: Off I-80 near Donner Pass
Best For: Advanced riders
Suitable For: Strong intermediates and better
Ground Cover: Evergreen forests, alpine meadows, lakes and rock fields
Seasons: Summer through fall. Some trails maintain snowpack into July.

Description:
If you're looking for gorgeous alpine scenery, go no further than the region near I-80 near Donner Pass. The Hole-in-the-Ground Loop is simply one of the best alpine rides anywhere for strong intermediate riders. Combining smooth single-track with long rocky stretches through semi-open evergreen forest, the Hole-in-the-Ground trail is challenging without being overwhelming. Intermediate riders will only need to walk short stretches.

Please note that the high altitude does make the 16 miles areobically challenging. Be sure to bring plenty of water. Lower Montez Lake is easily reachable along the western part of the loop and a quick dip is a great way to recharge.

Directions to trailhead(s):

Take Soda Springs exit off I-80, 21 miles west of Truckee. On south side of I-80 head east on Donner Pass Road for 0.5 miles to Soda Springs.
